MACON, Ga. – Looking to compete for its first Atlantic Sun Championship, the Lipscomb men’s cross country team was predicted to finish second as announced by the league on Thursday.
The Bisons garnered 74 points and one first place vote as the league favorite, ETSU, collected 94 points and six first place votes. Kennesaw State received two first place votes to finish third with 67 points. Florida Gulf Coast was a close fourth with 65 points. USC Upstate collected the final first place vote to go with 63 points.
“The men’s team is different than any men’s team we have had before,” Bill Taylor, director of cross country and track and field, said. “The young guys are stepping up big in practices. The fifth-year seniors are on a mission.
“With that being said, I am a bit surprised we are ranked second in the preseason. I think I voted us third or fourth. We can contend for the A-Sun championship. However we have a lot of work to do and we have to see how our freshmen respond at this level.”
Taylor thinks the voting shows how tight the race to win the A-Sun will be and thinks it will be an exciting finish.
“It looks like there are about four teams that are legitimate contenders,” Taylor said. “Who knows who else will step up as the season progresses. I am excited to see how we develop over the long haul.
“We have some learning to do before we get to conference in November.”
Taylor also believes this is the strongest team in Lipscomb history, in terms of both talent and attitude wise.
“What makes me very excited is that the attitude and desire is clearly stronger than any previous season,” Taylor said. “We also have the best quality depth we have ever had.
“This will be the best men’s team in Lipscomb history. I have no doubt about that. How good? That will be fun to find out.”
