ATHENS, Ga. – Opening day is finally here for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball team.

Tonight at 6 they will face host Georgia in the first round of the Bulldog Invitation at the Ramsey Student Center. Also in the tournament are Furman and Texas Christian.

“Georgia is in the mix in the Southeastern Conference,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “We know it is going to be a tough battle. We know the environment is going to be electric."

This is the first meeting between Georgia and Lipscomb in volleyball.

“It is hard to gauge where you are at this stage of the preseason,” Rosenthal said. “Coaches all around the country are somewhat scratching their heads wondering if their teams are that good, that bad or somewhere in the middle.

“The key to the match Friday is to settle our nerves and put the environment and the other team out of the picture. We know we are going to have to limit our errors and serve to a bigger team which poses a problem blocking-wise. We are going to run things fast and Georgia knows that. It comes down to execution at this point.”

Senior setter Caitlin Dotson, junior outside hitter Lauren Ford and junior middle blocker Jewell Dobson are all preseason Atlantic Sun selections this season. Senior libero Stephanie Rex and sophomore middle blocker Molly Spitznagle also return as starters.

“These first matches have to be about you other than the other team,” Rosenthal said. “I feel like we have a really good cohesiveness.

“You look out there and we have a number of upperclassmen in the starting group. It is fun to see that. These girls have worked hard to get to this point and have a good understanding of each other. I think the chemistry of the team is really good.”

The Lady Bisons have a 1-0 record with Furman having won 3-0 in 2010.

The Lady Bisons are 0-1 against Texas Christian, a 3-0 winner in the Wildcat Classic in Tucson, Ariz., last season.

This is the season opener for all four teams.

The Lady Bisons will face Furman at 9 a.m. Saturday and then play Texas Christian at 4:30 p.m.
