Macon, Ga.-Lipscomb Lady Bisons junior middle blocker Jewell Dobson has won her first ever Atlantic Sun Player of the Week award. The honor was announced today by the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Dobson led the Lady Bisons to a 3-0 weekend in the Lipscomb Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday. The tournament was sponsored by the Marriott Courtyard-Brentwood.
Dobson leads the conference in kills per set with 4.63, a total of 88. Her .445 hitting percentage is also first in the conference.
Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal sees Dobson following in the footsteps of two standout middle blockers for the Lady Bisons- Alex Kelly, two-time A-Sun Player of the Year; and Katie Rose, also an A-Sun Player of the Year.
Dobson is benefiting from a change in the offensive approach as the Lady Bisons look for new ways to score.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Jewell,” Rosenthal said. “She has been working on this for seven or eight months.
“When you look at the leaders in kills Jewell is up there with a lot of outside hitters. It is unusual for a middle blocker to be there.”
The Lady Bisons swept all three matches from Jacksonville State, Samford and South Alabama in the tournament. Dobson was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her efforts.
Dobson averaged 4.89 kills per set while hitting a blistering .507. She also contributed a pair of service aces, eight digs and five blocks.
Against Jacksonville State she posted a match high 16 kills. She finished with a match high 14 kills against South Alabama and tied for the match high against Samford with 14.
Rosenthal credits the way that Dobson and setter Caitlin “Dot” Dotson are working together for the success in the middle.
“It is great to see the confidence of both Jewell and Dot growing with each match,” Rosenthal said. “With Dot and Jewell some of the stuff they are doing is doing is not fair to other teams.”
Lipscomb is now 4-2 and in second place in the A-Sun.
