CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –The Lipscomb Bisons tennis team won four championships at the Steve Baras Fall Classic Sunday at Tennessee-Chattanooga.
“This is first for us as a program to win this many matches at a quality tournament like this,” coach Mario Hernandez said. “I know the guys are excited with our success so far and want more of it.”
The Bisons were successful in all four of their matches.
In singles, Daniel Hernandez and Rob Mitchell were champions in their respective flights.
“I felt good, played really solid, and came out strong,” said Daniel Hernandez. “We need to continue working on our attitudes and coming into the match strong from the beginning.”
Hernandez defeated Aaron Jumonville from MTSU 6-2,6-3 for the champion’s title in flight two.
Freshman Rob Mitchell, after losing the first set, came back and won in a tight three-set match against Garrison Laduca from Samford University 3-6,6-2,6-3. With the win Mitchell earned the singles championship in flight three.
The Bisons also picked up a pair of wins in doubles competition.
The duo of David Salazar and Hernandez defeated Claesson and Verberne from Belmont 8-7 in flight three.
Mitchell and John Tougher won 8-4 against the pair of Amon and Setter from ETSU.
“I thought we all showed signs of what we are working on, but there is still a lot of room for improvement in certain areas,” said Tougher.
Coach Hernandez sees a bright future for the team.
“Looking forward, we need to keep working on our games but also our competitive nature,” coach Hernandez said. “It doesn’t matter when, where, or who we are playing.
“We want to have the mindset that any opportunity on the court is a chance for us to get closer to our vision for the team. If we keep the vision in mind and become obsessed with working toward an exciting but attainable vision, we will get there.”
