NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb women’s tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season after defeating North Alabama 7-0 Saturday inside the Whitworth Indoor Tennis Facility.
“Our girls did well tonight against UNA,” said Lipscomb coach Jamie Aid. “We knew UNA was going to play slower tempo tennis. These are matches that are good for us to play because they make us stay true to our tennis.”
The Lady Bisons took the doubles point by winning at all three positions.
“Doubles got off to a slower start than we would like, however we pulled it together and swept doubles,” Aid said. “All of our girls did their job in singles.”
Captains Deahna Welcher and Jenny Borck continued their doubles success, defeating UNA’s pair of Natalia Barragan and Olivera Ngouabeu by a score of 6-3.
“Doubles started off slow today,” Borck said. “But then Deahna and I won six games in a row. “We just needed to focus a little more and play the match one point at a time.”
In singles play, Welcher was at No.1 and beat Ngouabeu in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). “My goal today was to play relaxed,” said Welcher. “We have been working on me having 100 percent confidence in my shots, and I feel like I achieved that a lot more today.”
In other singles, Melissa Kromer at No.2, Laura Kent at No. 3 and Lorena Djuknic at No.4 won their matches to seal the victory for the Lady Bisons.
Borck and freshmen Sierra Troxel won at No. 5 and No.6. They defeated Madison Patey and Morgan Jose in an eight game set.
“We were happy to be off the match at 9 p.m. so we could celebrate our win then quickly start resetting for tomorrow’s match,” Aid said. “We want to stay true to our process.
“We are looking forward to MTSU tomorrow. They will present new challenges for us. We are excited to compete Sunday morning and hopeful for positive results. We are excited to see more growth from our team.”
Lady Bisons will hit the road for Murfreesboro, Tenn., Sunday morning for an 11 a.m. match.
