SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was billed as possibly the premier series of the Atlantic Sun season.
The Lipscomb Lady Bisons entered the series unbeaten in six games at Cyrill Stadium. USC Upstate did not have a home loss this season.
The stands were full for every game. Fans reacted to every pitch. ESPN3 showed all three games. But the Lady Bisons aren’t taking any fond memories home from this weekend.
The Purple and Gold lost all three games in the series. They closed out the series with an 8-1 loss Sunday afternoon in the nightcap of the doubleheader after losing game one 7-6 in the seventh. Friday night they lost the first game of the series 4-0.
Ashley Anderson, 12-2, started for the Lady Bisons in game two against Upstate’s Lexi Shubert. It was a rematch of Friday’s game.
Brittany Elmore started off the game by slamming Shubert’s first pitch over the left field wall.
Upstate answered with three runs in the bottom of the first with two of those runs on a homer to center by Kendall Settlemyre.
In the second Upstate added two more. They would strike again in the fourth for three runs, including a two-run round tripper to right by Meredith Barnes.
Elmore added a single to lead the Lady Bisons with two hits. Neely added a single to extend her team-leading hitting streak to 12 games.
Anderson pitched four innings and gave up eight runs and nine hits. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
Tanner Sanders relieved and allowed one hit in two innings. She struck out one.
Shubert, 13-1, gave up five hits and struck out four. She did not walk a batter in seven innings.
Coach Kristin Ryman was ejected from the game in the fourth inning for disputing a play on first.
The Lady Bisons are 27-8 overall, 8-6 in the conference. Upstate is 32-4, 13-2 in the A-Sun.
Decisive seventh inning
A five-hit, three-run seventh inning made the difference as the Lipscomb Lady Bisons fell 7-6 to Upstate in game one.
Upstate’s Shellie Robinson homered to left field on the first pitch of the game by Lipscomb’s Heather Parker.
But that was the only run the Spartans would score until adding another run in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Haley Elliott blasted a three-run home run to left center field with no outs in the fourth for the Lady Bisons.
They added two more in the sixth on a double to left center by Bridgette Begle and a single to the pitcher by Elmore which both brought in a run.
Kelsey Cartwright led off the seventh with a solo home run over the left field fence.
Upstate’s Maddison Kieffer was the big hitter in the game with three hits and four runs batted in. She had a two-run shot over the right field fence in the sixth. She also had the deciding single with two outs in the seventh that resulted in a misplay at second that allowed the winning run to score.
Rena’ Cothron led the Lady Bisons with two hits. The Lady Bisons connected for nine hits with four off of starter Anna Miller and five against Hannah Alexander.
Heather Parker threw six innings for the Lady Bisons. She scattered seven hits and allowed six runs, all earned. She walked three and struck out three.
