Dr. Kent Johnson

Dr. Kent Johnson has been serving as the faculty athletic representative since 1997. He has been at Lipscomb University since 1984. Prior to coming to Lipscomb, he taught at the high school level, coached high school track and directed a Wellness Program for a hospital in Mississippi. In 1986, Dr. Johnson temporarily left Lipscomb and returned to graduate school and completed his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Dr. Johnson returned to Lipscomb in 1988. From 1988-1993, Dr. Johnson served as the Cross Country and Track coach at Lipscomb, but stepped down from his coaching responsibilities in 1993 and became the Chair of the Department of Kinesiology. Dr. Johnson became certified as an ACSM Exercise Specialist in 1991 and was elected as a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine in 1995. Dr. Johnson has been an active member of ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), SEACSM (Southeastern Chapter of ACSM), AAHPERD (American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance) and other professional organizations.
He has published and presented professional papers at the state, regional and national levels. Dr. Johnson has received several internal and external grants during his tenure at Lipscomb. For three consecutive summers (1989-1991), Dr. Johnson was funded to participate in the U.S. Navy-ASEE Summer Faculty Research Program at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Pensacola, FL. He also received four Lipscomb Summer Research Faculty Grants (1990, 1994, 1997 and 2004) and two Lipscomb sabbaticals for research (1996 and 2002-2003).
In the past several years, Dr. Johnson has been interested in helping develop curriculum program standards for undergraduate Exercise Science Programs and promoting Exercise Science as a profession. He currently serves as an accreditation program reviewer for the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences (CoAES). In addition, his recent research interests have been devoted to ergogenic aids and sports performance. In the summer of 2000, Dr. Johnson received a grant to investigate the effects and prevalence of hidden ephedra use by athletes in diet and supplement products. In 1998, he received the SEACSM Service Award and In 1999, Dr. Johnson was presented the TAHPERD Scholar award.
Along with his responsibilities as faculty athletic representative, Dr. Johnson is also a professor of Exercise Science and serves as Chair in the Department of Kinesiology. He teaches courses in: Exercise Physiology, Exercise Physiology Lab, Kinesiology, Special Topics in Exercise Science, Seminar in Kinesiology and supervises Exercise Science Student Interns.
Dr. Johnson is married to Susan, a pre-Kindergarten teacher at Lipscomb's Elementary School and they have three children, Russell, Randi and Ryan. He currently serves as an Elder at the Antioch Church of Christ. Dr. Johnson enjoys teaching, research and running.
