Despite a strong performance from Mollie Mitchell and a solo home run from Haley Elliott, Lipscomb dropped the opening game of the Atlantic Sun Softball Tournament to Jacksonville 2-1, Wednesday. The Lady Bisons face host USC Upstate at 2 p.m. (CT) in a must-win to stay alive in the tournament.

Lipscomb faces off against Jacksonville at 3 p.m. (ET) Wednesday in the opening game of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Softball Championship, hosted by USC Upstate. The fourth-seeded Lady Bisons will battle the defending champions in a rematch of last season's championship game.

Senior Whitney Kiihnl was named Atlantic Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year the conference office announced, Tuesday. Kiihnl, who graduated Saturday with a degree in biology, is the award's inaugural recipient.

Led by junior Kelsey Cartwright's first-team selection, five Lady Bisons earned post-season recognition from the Atlantic Sun, Tuesday. Whitney Kiihnl and Haley Elliott were second-team honorees, while Ashley Anderson and Gracey Aguirre found spots on the All-Freshman team.

Lipscomb senior Whitney Kiihnl was named to the District III All-Academic team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Friday. She is the first Lady Bison softball player to be named to the All-District team since 2010.

Kelsey Cartwright and Kristen Sturdivant led a resurgent Lipscomb attack in a doubleheader sweep of ETSU, Saturday. The Lady Bisons locked up the four-seed for next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament and will face Jacksonville in the tournament opener Wednesday.

When Whitney Kiihnl walks across the stage for Saturday's graduation, her academic career at Lipscomb will come to a close. But the record-breaking pitcher still has some big moments left in her softball career for the Lady Bisons.
