Lipscomb's Lady Bisons closed out a long stretch of road games Wednesday afternoon with a brief trip across town to play Tennessee State.
The Lady Bisons split the doubleheader, losing the first game 6-3 and coming back in the second game to win 2-0.
In the first game the Lady Bisons pounded out eight hits with Leigh Littlle, Niki Bails and Julia Davidson, the top three hitters in the order, each getting a pair of hits apiece. Bails' slammed a pair of doubles, one in the third inning and one in the seventh.
The Lady Bisons scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Sara Meek led off with a walk. Heather Collins singled up the middle. Meek advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Ashley Villalpando and then scored on a wild pitch.
Tennessee State tied the game with one run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Lady Bisons took the lead again in the top of the fifth.
Little led off with a single to right field. Bails grounded out to the pitcher moving Little to second. Davidson singled to shortstop sending Little to third. Jessica Wilson reached base on a fielder's choice which scored Little.
In the bottom of the sixth TSU exploded for five runs.
The Lady Bisons scored one run in the top of the seventh, but the rally fell short. With one out Bails doubled down the left field line. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the third baseman.
Meek pitched the first game for the Lady Bisons. She scattered 11 hits and gave up six runs, all earned. She walked one and struck out five.
In game two the Lady Bisons rallied behind the pitching of Tyree who three a complete game shutout. She gave up only two hits, walked one batter and struck out two.
"We haven't played the best defense behind her and she has struggled a little bit with walks," said Peck. "But against TSU she only gave up one walk and we didn't have any errors behind her. You put all of those factors together and it shows that she is a very capable pitcher who can definitely do a lot of damage for us.
"It was good for her to have a performance like that. It was good for our team."
The Lady Bisons scored both of their runs in the third inning. Tyree walked to lead off. Little was safe on a sacrifice fielder's choice. Davidson doubled to score Tyree. Little scored the second run off of a wild pitch as she advanced from third to home. Davidson went four-for-four in the game after posting two hits in game one. The Lady Bisons finished game two with eight hits as well.
"Julia had a big day at the plate, especially in the second game," said Peck.
The Lady Bisons raised their record to 13-25 overall. TSU fell to 15-24.
The Lady Bisons are back home Saturday at 1 to face Florida Atlantic in an A-Sun doubleheader at Draper Diamond.
