The Lady Bisons love the smell of horsehide in the morning.
It smells like victory.
Saturday morning the Lady Bisons opened the Georgia Southern Classic in Statesboro, Ga., with a 10-1 victory over Savannah State.
The Lady Bisons spotted Savannah State one-run in the top of the first inning, but Christy Grisham picked up her first win of the season by shutting Savannah State down the rest of the way.
Grisham, 1-1, allowed only the one hit in the first inning, a single. She struck out 14 and walked five.
At the plate the Lady Bisons scattered 12 hits.
"Amber Woods has done a great job working with our hitters," Lady Bisons coach Kristin Peck said. "In the fall when we worked on hitting we really broke everything down for them. We worked on a lot of the little things and we are seeing the results of that work."
First baseman Heather Collins led the Lady Bisons with three hits, including a two-run home run and a season-high five runs batted in.
Designated hitter Kellie Sirus hit her first triple of the season.
"Before the season began I sat with my assistant coaches and we tried to decide how many players would get a least one home run this season," Peck said. "We have a lot of players with pop in their bats, but we didn't expect what we have seen so far.
"We don't focus on home runs. We aren't concerned with how many home runs we hit. We are concerned with runs batted in. And we expect the middle of the line-up _ Julia Davidson, Heather Collins, Abby Keese and Kellie Sirus _ to get most of our RBI. "
The Lady Bisons were scoreless until the fourth inning. Collins brought home Davidson with her home run to left, her second of the season. Kellie Sirus reached based on her triple to right center and scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth the Lady Bisons added five runs. Collins and Grisham each drove in runs with singles. Keese capped the inning with her three-run home run, her third of the season.
The win raised the Lady Bisons record to 7-2. Savannah State slipped to 0-4.
The Lady Bisons play Savannah State again Sunday afternoon.
