It's not how you start a game, but how you finish that matters the most.
Such was the case for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team Friday afternoon in the first round of the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla. The Lady Bisons spotted Princeton three first inning runs and then struck for four of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 win. The Lady Bisons, 13-14 , have won four of their last five games.
Princeton pitcher Jamie Lettire helped herself out with a two-run home run to spark the first inning scoring spree.
But Lady Bisons pitcher Christen Campbell, winning her second game in a row to raise her record to 8-6, quickly got in a pitching groove after enduring the rough start. She scattered five hits, but completely shut down Princeton in the final four innings without a hit or a run. She walked one runner and struck out six.
Campbell, a freshman right-hander, has thrown 11 complete games this season.
In the sixth inning Heather Collins started off for the Lady Bisons with a single. She was replaced by Samantha Little as a pinch-runner. Abby Keese hit her fifth home run of the season, driving in Little to cut the lead to 3-2.
With two outs Julia Davidson walked. Christy Grisham then reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop. Niki Bails reached on an infield hit. With bases load Lauren Dortwegt hit a ball that bounced off Lettire's glove and allowed Davidson and Grisham to score.
Keese also slammed a double to go with her home run. Dortwegt, the leading hitter for the Lady Bisons, finished with three hits. It was the 13th multiple hit game for Dortwegt and the fourth time she has collected three hits in a game.
Keese had two runs batted in, her fifth multiple-RBI game of the season. Leigh Little had a single in the game, extending her hitting streak to eight games.
Lettire, 2-2, gave up eight hits. She walked two and struck out eight.
The two teams meet again Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Patricia Wilson Field. Princeton, 9-13, has lost four games in a row.
