The Florida sunshine agreed with the Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team.
They closed out the Stetson Invitational Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 rout of host Stetson. The Lady Bisons had played Stetson, the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic Sun Championship, Wednesday in conference play and split a doubleheader. They stayed in DeLand, Fla,, to participate in the Invitational, finishing with a 4-1 record that also included two wins over Princeton and one against Kent State. The lone loss was to Cornell.
The Lady Bisons used their power hitting to win on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday they worked harder for their runs with four in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. The only extra base hit was a double by Kellie Sirus.
In the third inning Lauren Dortwegt struck out, but reached base on a wild pitch. Leigh Little moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Dortwegt went to third when Heather Collins grounded out. Kellie Sirus walked. Abby Keese singled to bring in Dortwegt. Christen Campbell singled Kellie Sirus home. Julia Davidson singled to push both Keese and Campbell across the plate.
With two outs in the fourth singled. Dortwegt singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Leigh Little singled to score Dortwegt. Collins singled to bring in Little.
Campbell singled to start the fifth inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Davidson grounded out to the pitcher but moved Campbell to third. Niki Bails singled to bring home Campbell.
Campbell, a freshman right-hander, ran her record to 10-6 with the complete game victory. She also added two hits and two runs.
Campbell scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Amanda Lindsey started for Stetson. She gave up 10 hits and seven runs, all earned, in 4 1/3 innings. She walked one and struck out one. Lindsey slipped to 8-2 with the loss. Nicole Peltz pitched the final 2 2/3 innings. She allowed three hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out two.
The Lady Bisons are 16-15. Stetson fell to 25-10.
