Tuesday, December 02, 2008Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Peck didn’t have to look very far to find her two recruits for 2009.
Camille Cross, a catcher from Friendship Christian School; and Lacy Walker, an infielder from Station Camp High School, have signed to play for the Lady Bisons. Both are expected to provide versatility with the ability to play several positions.
“Since we do not have any seniors this year and will be returning everyone from this current team for next year, we felt that it was vital to bring in a couple of players who would supplement the players we have,” said Peck. “Our goals for this class were to find a couple of players who have some visible strengths to immediately bring to the table, and who are ready to learn and develop in our system.
“We wanted to find two players who we felt like could be better in the future than what they are now. We also wanted to find quality student-athletes and people who would fit in with our program and Lipscomb University. We feel like we have found all of those qualities in these two excellent student-athletes who will represent what Lipscomb Softball is all about…and we did not have to leave the state in either case.”
Walker, who lives in Hendersonville, is the daughter of Shawn and Kenneth Walker. She will be the fourth generation of her family to attend Lipscomb University.
“Lacy is also an outstanding student and person who is already very familiar with Lipscomb,” said Peck. “She comes from a great family, and we are anxious to get her onto the field with us next fall.”
At Station Camp Walker was a member of the All-District Team in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She was also the team MVP in softball in both 2007 and 2008.
Walker’s .461 batting average is the highest in school history. She also had 23 steals, also the most in season for Station Camp.
Walker has also been honored for her academic achievements as well. She is a member of the Beta Club, the National Honor Society, National Honor Roll (2006 and 2007); National Society of High School Scholars (2oo6), Who’s Who Among American High School Students (2006, 2007) and Who’s Who Among American High School Athletes (2006, 2007). She is also a member of Noah’s Promise, DECA and serves as treasurer of the Interact Club.
“We are very excited about the addition of Lacy to our team,” said Peck. “She is someone who is going to bring a lot of versatility and speed to the table, and she is going to push our infielders and outfielders right away. Defensively, she brings the ability to play nearly anywhere, and offensively she brings consistency and speed.
“Lacy goes hard all the time and plays a very gutsy game. She will fit in very well with the style of our program and the direction we are going, and we are excited to see her continue to develop at this level.”
Cross, who lives in Lebanon, is the daughter of Jackie and Corky Cross. She is also no stranger to Lipscomb. Two of her sisters attended Lipscomb. Her parents are Belmont graduates. Her father also played basketball at Belmont.
Camille’s personality makes her a joy to be around,” said Peck. “She is another dedicated student-athlete with a great family, and we cannot wait to get her on campus.”
Cross was All-State in 2007 and 2008. She was All-Region and All-District in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She served as team captain in 2008 and also was named MVP in softball in 2008.
She lettered in varsity football as a kicker. She was also All-District and All-State in track and field. She was named the team MVP in track and field in 2008.
“Camille has the ability to make an immediate impact with her bat, and defensively can play a number of positions,” said Peck. “Camille brings a tremendous amount of talent, and we are excited to get her here and see her continue to develop.
“She is a very hard worker who brings a passion to reach any challenges she faces. She is an outstanding fit for Lipscomb University and our program, and like Lacy, will contribute to the direction we are moving with our team.”
