Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Draper Diamond, both teams prevailed with the Lady Bisons winning game two 9-6 after dropping game one 2-1.
Kellie Sirus provided much of the offensive punch for the Lady Bisons with four hits and four RBI in game two. It was the second time this season she has driven in four runs. She had four hits for the first time this season.
Game two did not get off to a promising start for the Lady Bisons. They spotted Campbell four runs off of home runs by Robin Leathers, Katie Hinton and Karlie Love in the first with starting pitcher Alaina Jacobson giving way to Whitney Kiihnl. The freshman, who pitched a complete game in game one, struck out 12 of the first 15 batters she faced. She had 14 strikeouts in 6.2 innings, a team season high and a career high.
The Lady Bisons responded with three runs in the third inning. With two outs Lauren Dortwegt singled trhough the right side. Courtney Billington doubled to left center to bring in Dortwegt. Sirus singled to send Billington across the plate. Abby Keese singled to drive in Sirus.
In the fourth inning the Lady Bisons took control of the game with five runs. A double by Sirus drove in two runs.
In the sixth Courtney Billington doubled. Sirus drove Billington home with a double.
Kihnl is 10-5 for the season, winning game two and losing game one.
In game one Campbell opened the first inning with a run. Leathers singled through the left side of the field to start the game. Hinton struck out swinging as Leathers stole second. Love then doubled to left field to bring in Leathers.
In the fifth Campbell would add what proved to be the game winner as Leathers hit a solo home run with two outs.
The Lady Bisons missed a key opportunity to score in the fifth. Megan Rottler and Mackenzie Tucker led off with back-to-back walks. Lauren Dortwegt loaded the bases with a bunt single. The Lady Bisons failed in three attempts to bring a runner across the plate.
In the seventh the Lady Bisons tried to mount a rally. Tucker was safe on an error by Campbell’s shortstop. Dortwegt and Courtney Billington each grounded out, but Tucker moved to third base. Tucker scored on a wild pitch. Kellie Sirus walked, but was thrown out at second as Abby Keese hit a grounder to the shortstop.
Kiihnl went the distance for the Lady Bisons. She gave up seven hits and the two runs, both earned. She struck out eight and walked one .
Campbell used three pitchers in the game. Brittany Stanley, 9-3, picked up the win. Katie Woodcock pitched one-third of an inning to earn the save.
Dortwegt and Campbell each had two hits for the Lady Bisons. Campbell had a double, the Lady Bisons only extra base hit.
The Lady Bisons are 23-8, 4-2 in the A-Sun. Campbell is 25-11, 10-4 in the conference.
