MOBILE, Ala. – Lipscomb ran up against a hot-hitting Alabama team that scored multiple runs in four separate innings on the second day of competition at the Mardi Gras Invitational. The Lady Bison fell to the second-ranked Crimson Tide, 15-4, in six innings.
After a scoreless first inning, Alabama ignited for four runs in the top of the second. The Crimson Tide attack was paced by a two-run double from Kayla Braud and helped by a Lipscomb throwing error that brought in another run.
Lipscomb scratched back for a run in the bottom half of the second. With the bases loaded, sophomore Haley Elliott grounded into a fielder’s choice that brought home senior Mollie Mitchell.
Lipscomb grabbed two more runs in the third inning, when freshman a Gracey Aguirre triple to right-centerfield brought Mitchell and Vanessa Medina around to score.
"Gracey Aguirre's hit was key," said Lipscomb head coach Kristin Ryman. "Getting two runs at that point was huge for us, and huge for her as well.'
The Crimson Tide scored three more times in the top of the fourth, with Courtney Conley’s two-run shot accounting for the biggest blow.
Mitchell singled to bring around junior Kelsey Cartwright in the fourth inning.
Alabama poured it on in the final two innings, plating eight runs. Kaila Hunt homered for the Crimson Tide in the sixth and Jackey Branham drove in two of her team-high three runs in the later innings.
"The game was closer than the score indicated," Ryman said. "We were right with them into the fifth inning. Both teams had a lot of chances today, and they capitalized on more.
"The final score is a little disheartening. I know our girls were a little disappointed. But we'll learn from it and move forward."
Mitchell and Cartwright collected two hits for the Lady Bison. Mitchell is hitting .429 (3-for-7) through the tournament’s first three games.
"We were glad to see Kelsey Cartwright get a couple of hits today," Ryman said. "Mollie Mitchell always seems to perform her best against the best competition, and today was no different."
Action concludes at the Mardi Gras Invitational Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when Lipscomb faces the host Jaguars of South Alabama.
