SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Lipscomb split two games Saturday at the Mustang Classic, defeating Cal Poly 12-1 and falling to UNLV 5-3. The Lady Bison are 3-1 at the Mustang Classic with one game left tomorrow morning.
Lipscomb put two runs on the board in the first inning. After junior Bree Thurman and sophomore Rena’ Cothron reached base via error, seniors Mollie Mitchell and Caroline Mason brought them around to score on a single to left and a ground out to third to give the Lady Bison a 2-0 lead.
Cal Poly got a run back in the home half of the second after Nicole Lund walked and Mariah Cochiolo doubled to left centerfield to bring her around.
The Lady Bison added another run in the third inning thanks to timely base running. Junior Kelsey Cartwright singled, with Mitchell moving her to second via sacrifice bunt. Mason singled up the middle, bringing Cartwright around to score and giving the Lady Bison some breathing space.
Lipscomb tacked on another run in the top of the fourth. After Whitney Kiihnl reached via error, she moved around to third and was driven in by Cartwright to give the Lady Bison a 4-1 lead.
Sophomore Haley Elliott continued her slugging ways in the fifth. Following a Mason single, Elliott hit a two-run homer to left field to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Lady Bison piled on six runs in the seventh inning to end the first game due to run-rule. Freshman Brianne Welch, pinch-running for Elliott, scored on a double from sophomore Bridgette Begle.
Begle scored on a single from sophomore Rena’ Cothron. She would later score on a grand slam by Cartwright, along with Thurman and Kiihnl.
Lipscomb pounded out 15 hits in the first game, scoring 12 total runs. Cartwright drove in five runs, while Mason and Elliott drove in two apiece. Begle went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
“We hit well top to bottom today,” said Lipscomb head coach Kristin Ryman. “We had contributions from everybody.
“Obviously, Kelsey stood out with the grand slam. Caroline and Mollie both swung the bat well today, and Bridgette gave us a big boost at the bottom of the order.”
Kiihnl picked up her season’s 16th victory, going the distance and striking out two. She scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run.
Game Two – UNLV 5, Lipscomb 3
The Rebels got on the board first, plating two in the second inning. Korin Cuico hit a two-run home run, scoring Pauline Moreal and giving UNLV an early leg up.
Lipscomb scored in the top of third. After Cothron singled and stole second, Mason drove her in with a single to right field. Elliott singled to center, scoring Mitchell to knot the score at two apiece.
UNLV tacked on two runs in the home half of the third. Monreal drove in Tayler Aleman with a single to right field.
The Rebels added two in the fourth. A sacrifice scored Katie Uriarte and Aleman scored Elana Fata on a single to center.
Elliott got one back in the home half, driving in Mitchell after a Mason double advanced her to third.
The Lady Bison threatened in the seventh. After a Mason walk and a single by sophomore Kristen Sturdivant, Lipscomb stranded runners on second and third to end the game.
Redshirt freshman Ashley Anderson took the loss, tossing four innings and allowing five earned runs.
“Ashley threw well today,” Ryman said. “She did some good things on the mound. We got behind early, and one of our points of emphasis was to score early and pressure the other team. It was a frustrating game for us.”
The Lady Bison cap off the Mustang Classic tomorrow with an 11 a.m. (CT) tilt against Ball State.
