MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb senior Whitney Kiihnl has been named the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 26, the league office announced Monday.
Kiihnl went 4-0 over the weekend at the Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The righty tossed three complete games for Lipscomb including a three-hit, four-strikeout performance in the first game against UNLV that gave head coach Kristin Ryman her 200th career victory.
She worked one and a third innings of scoreless relief pitching to pick up the win later that same day against Cal Poly, striking out two batters in the process.
Kiihnl went the distance against the Mustangs on the second day of the Classic, scattering five hits and three runs while striking out two for the victory.
The Batesville, Miss. native closed out the weekend with an 11-strikeout performance against Ball State, avenging an earlier Lady Bison loss to the Cardinals in the 3-1 victory. The victory gives her 17 this season, tops in the Atlantic Sun.
All told, Kiihnl allowed just two earned runs in 24.1 innings pitched for a microscopic 0.58 ERA. She struck out 22 and allowed opponents to hit just .165.
This is Kiihnl’s 12th weekly award of her career and third for the 2012 season. She also won following her work at the Lady Bison Classic (March 12) and College of Charleston Classic (Feb. 26).
USC Upstate's Shellie Robinson took hitter of the week honors. Lipscomb junior Kelsey Cartwright was an honorable mention.
