MACON, Ga. – The awards continue to roll in for Whitney Kiihnl. The senior pitcher for the Lady Bisons softball team was named the 2012 Atlantic Sun softball Scholar Athlete of the Year the conference office announced, Tuesday.
Kiihnl, who graduated Saturday with a degree in biology, carried a 3.63 GPA through her collegiate career. The Batesville, Miss. native has been accepted into the physician’s assistant program at Harding University and will continue her academic career in the fall.
This is the second academic award Kiihnl’s received this year. She was named to the CoSIDA District III All-Academic team last Friday. The three-time All-Academic team honoree is the first Lipscomb softball player to earn Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The second-team all-conference selection went 22-12 with a 1.79 ERA and 211 strike outs for the Lady Bisons this season.
Junior Bree Thurman joined Kiihnl on the Academic All-Conference team. Thurman, who carries a 4.0 GPA in marketing, hit .208 with one home run and nine runs batted in during 52 starts in center field this season.
Of the twelve student-athletes chosen for the team, Thurman is the only one with a 4.0 GPA.
The duo will be on the field tomorrow in Spartanburg, S.C. as the Lady Bisons open the 2012 A-Sun Tournament against defending champion Jacksonville at 3 p.m. (ET).
