Lipscomb Athletics is excited to announce that the official dedication of Smith Stadium will take place on Saturday, April 12 at 3 p.m. or 15 minutes following game one of the Lady Bisons doubleheader with Mercer University.
Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
Smith Stadium will honor the families of Michael Smith and son Derek Smith who own Rio Grande Fence Company, one of Nashville's most respected businesses since 1958.
The Smith family has been instrumental in elevating the softball complex into one of collegiate softball's premier facilities.
Besides the construction of a 500-seat stadium, the Smith Family has generously assisted the Lipscomb softball program with a new stadium entrance surrounded by brick columns with flag poles adjoined by Rio Grande fencing, a new padded outfield wall and new backstop padding, a new windscreen that includes extensive branding throughout the park, new in-dugout restrooms for both home and away teams and a new inning by inning LED scoreboard that includes a decorative truss and Lipscomb branding.
"We are so appreciative of the Smith family for their tremendous support for our softball program," Philip Hutcheson, Director of Athletics, said. "The Smiths have been game changers for our Athletic Department and their support will bless our student-athletes for years to come.”
With the naming of Smith Stadium the Lipscomb Softball complex will officially be known as Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium.
“We are incredibly grateful for what the Smiths have done,” Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Ryman said. “It started a long time ago with what the Drapers gave to our program to allow us to have the ability to build a new field.
“We have one of the best facilities in the conference. I feel like it just keeps getting better and better and that is because of the generosity of first the Drapers and now the Smiths. The Smiths have gone above and beyond.”
Ryman points out that the Smiths are fans of the softball program.
“It is fun to work with the Smiths because they are detail people,” Ryman said. “They know how to run a business. They run one of the best in Nashville in Rio Grande Fence Co..
“They haven’t just given money and been hands off. They have continued to stay involved and that is exciting for me as a coach.”
