The Lady Bisons softball team ended the regular season in a big way with a 4-2 upset of the No. 11-ranked Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama 4-2 at Crockett Park Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Bisons head into the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Thursday morning as the No.3 -seed. Alabama is the top team in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference. The victory for the Lady Bisons was their fourth in a row.
"I am really proud of the way our girls played today," said Lipscomb interim head coach Cheryl Smith. "It gives us a lot of momentum going into the tournament. We need this kind of momentum going into the conference tournament for the first time."
The Lady Bisons struck first scoring one run in the first inning. Jennifer Cannon drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Jessica Wilson from third base.
The Lady Bisons then got a couple of timely hits in the third inning and scored three runs. Julia Davidson led the inning off singling through the left side. Davidson then advanced to second base on a wild pitch and then moved to third base on another wild pitch. Wilson drew a walk. Heather Collins drove a hard single to left field to score Davidson and advance Wilson to second base. Cannon then slapped a single to right field to load the bases up for Alysha Forsythe. Forsythe crushed a double to left center field to score Collins and Wilson.
The Lady Bisons closed out the game in exciting fashion. Ashley Courtney of Alabama drilled a home run to center field to lead off the seventh inning and make it a 4-2 game. Dominique Accetturo then drew a walk. Staci Ramsey flied out to left field for the first out. Dani Woods then drew a walk and advanced Accetturo to second base. Katie Johnson then struck out looking, and Lady Bisons catcher Forsythe gunned downed Deasy Phillips who was running to third base on a hit-and-run to end the game.
Forsythe led the way offensively for the Lady Bisons as she went 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in two of the four runs. Forsythe had the only extra base hit for the Lady Bisons. Forsythe closed out the regular season batting .288.
Leigh Little, Davidson and Collins each had two hits in the game for the Lady Bisons. Little went 2-for-4, and improved her batting average to .331. Davidson went 2-for-3 and scored one run. Davidson is batting.252. Collins went 2-for-4 and scored one run and drove in one. Collins leads the team in batting with a .344. average.
Starting right-handed pitcher Danielle Catalano ended her regular season career at Lipscomb in grand style as she threw five innings and gave up two hits and one earned run while striking out four batters. Catalano earned her 12 th win of the season and is now 12-9 with an earned run average of 1.91.
Sara Meek relieved Catalano. Meek closed out the game as she pitched two innings and gave up one hit and one earned run and struck out one batter. Meek earned her first save of the season and lowered her earned run average to 3.18.
The Lady Bisons scored four runs on nine hits and were flawless in the field. The Crimson Tide scored two runs on three hits and committed one error. The Crimson Tide scored both of their runs on solo home runs by Ramsey and Courtney.
The Lady Bosons travel to Boca Raton, Fla., to play in their first Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. The Lady Bisons received a No.3-seed in the tournament and will play No.4-seeded UCF in a single game. The tournament is double elimination and continues through Saturday.
