Lady Bisons Split With Campbell

Lipscomb's Lady Bisons softball team split a crucial doubleheader Saturday afternoon with visiting Campbell.

The Lady Bisons are one of six teams qualified for the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, but are still playing for seeding. The Lady Bisons lost the first game 3-1 in eight innings, behind the pitching of Danielle Catalano. The Lady Bisons came back to take the nightcap 4-1 with Sara Meek on the mound Both games were played at Crockett Park.

The Lady Bisons close out their conference schedule Sunday (May 1) when they play Gardner-Webb at 1 at Tennessee State University.

Campbell struck first in game one when Jessica Huffman slammed a solo home run to center field with two outs in the first inning.

Heather Collins scored the lone run for the Lady Bisons in the fourth inning. Collins reached base on a single to right center. She moved to third on a single by Candice McWherter. Collins scored on an error by the second baseman.

The game remained tied until the eighth inning. Campbell's Stephenie Pappas led off with a single to shallow left followed by a double to center by Joy_Lee Richardson that scored Pappas. Samantha Crews entered the game to run for Richardson who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher by Megan Paul. Corri Long put down a hard squeeze bunt to third Kate Richards who lost the ball out of her trying to tag Crews as she left third for home.

Catalano ended a six-game conference winning streak with the loss. Catalano allowed only five hits in the loss.

Kelly Weaver started the game for Campbell, pitching four innings and allowing five hits. Lexi Myers started the fifth and pitched the rest of the way for the victory. Myers gave up one hit.

In game two Meek gave up only four hits. The lone Campbell run came in the fifth inning. Megan Paul led off with a double to the gap in left center. Long grounded out to third moving Paul to third. Paul scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Bailey Garner.

All of the Lady Bisons runs were scored in the third inning. Shay Sullivan led off with a walk. Meek moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Leigh Little singled to left, driving in Sullivan. Little moved to second on the throw home. Julia Davidson flied out to center for the second out. Jessica Wilson singled to center, scoring Little. Heather Collins walked. Alysha Forsythe singled up the middle to score Wilson. Jennifer Cannon walks to load the bases. McWherrer singled up the middle to score Collins.

Meek pitched a complete game, allowing four hits.

Lauren Caviness started for Campbell and took the loss. She left the game in the third inning with two outs. Kelly Weaver came on in relief and pitched the rest of the way.
