Lady Bisons Close Out Conference Schedule With Sweep Of Gardner-Webb

The Lady Bisons defeated Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at Tennessee State University's Softball Complex. The Lady Bisons took game one 5-3, and won game two 2-1.

In game one the Lady Bisons came out on top in a back and forth battle for the lead. The Bulldogs struck first with one run in the 1st inning. The Lady Bisons responded with one run in the 1st to make it a 1-1 game.

The Bulldogs scored one run again in the 4th inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Lady Bisons then took the lead after they scored two runs of their own in the 4 th. Heather Collins drew a lead off walk. Niki Bails then pinch ran for Collins. Candice McWherter laced a double to right center and advanced Bails to third base. Jennifer Cannon singled to right field to score Bails and advance McWherter to third base. Alysha Forsythe then hit a sac-fly to right field to score McWherter.

The Bulldogs would score one more time in the 5th inning to tie the game 3-3. The Lady Bisons jumped in front with a two run inning in the 5 th and hold onto the lead. Leigh Little hit a lead off single to get things going for the Lady Bisons. Julia Davidson then hit a bunt single to first base. Jessica Wilson then singled to the shortstop to load up the bases. Collins then slapped a single to right field to score Little from third. Jennifer Cannon then hit a sac-fly to center field to score Davidson.

The Lady Bisons were led offensively by Cannon who went 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in two of the Lady Bisons five runs. Cannon improved her batting average to .266.

Wilson also had a good day behind the plate in game one as she went 2-for-3. Wilson improved her batting average to .306.

Starting right-handed pitcher Danielle Catalano threw four innings of work as she scattered four hits and gave up two earned runs while striking out three.

Allison Tyree relieved Catalano in the 5th inning and closed out the game. Tyree threw a solid three innings of work as she gave up only one hit and zero runs and walked one. Tyree earned the win in game one and is now 5-6 and lowered her earned run average 3.95.

In game two the Lady Bisons let go of a 1-0 lead in the 7th inning after the Bulldogs scored one run and to make the score 1-1. The Lady Bisons would end the game in dramatic fashion by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 7 th.

The Lady Bisons scored one run in the 4th inning to take a 1-0 lead. Wilson hit a lead off single to right field and advanced to second base on a bad throw by the right fielder. Collins smashed a single through the left side advancing Wilson to third base. McWherter then singled right field and scored Wilson from third base.

The Lady Bisons would commit three errors in the top of the 7th inning and let the Bulldogs back in the game and tie the score. The Lady Bisons emerged with the victory though after Little crushed a one out triple to right center field. Davidson then hit a sac-fly to score the winning run ,Little, from third base.

Starting right-handed pitcher Sara Meek threw her ninth complete game of the season. Meek surrendered two hits and zero earned run while fanning four batters. Meek improved her record to 9-6 and lowered her earned run average to 3.18.

The Lady Bisons put themselves into good position for tournament seeding, as they are now 26-22, and 13-7 in the A-Sun. The Bulldogs finished the season 19-33, and 3-17 in the A-Sun.

The Lady Bisons will play their final regular season game on May 8 at Crockett Park when they will host Alabama of the Southeastern Conference at 2:00 p.m.
