Lady Bisons show poise in 5-3 win over Loyola-Chicago

It was the first game of the season for Loyola-Chicago and it was also their first loss.

The Lady Bisons beat Loyola-Chicago 5-3 Saturday afternoon in the Breast Cancer Strikeout Classic at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. It was the second win for the Lady Bisons in their last three games.

The Lady Bisons opened with a run in the first inning. Leigh Little started off with a walk. She moved to second on a sacrifice to third base by Niki Bails. With two outs Heather Collins doubled to left field to score Little.

Loyola-Chicago answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning.

"We gave up a couple of home runs to them," said Lipscomb coach Kristin Peck. "All of their runs were off of homer runs.

"Our players showed a lot of poise. We were able to keep hitting and take the lead again."

The Lady Bisons took control of the game in the fourth with four runs. With two outs Kim Jacobson singled to right center. Kate Richards was safe on an error by the shortstop. Leigh Little walked to load the bases. Niki Bails singled up the middle to bring home both Jacobson and Richards. Julia Davidson doubled to right center to score Little and Bails.

Loyola-Chicago answered with one more run in the bottom of the fourth.

Freshman pitcher Falon Catalano picked up her first collegiate win. She allowed four hits and three earned runs in five innings. She struck out four and walked two.

Jacobson closed out the game. She gave up one hit on the way to picking up the save.

"We started Falon and she gave us a few good innings," said Peck. "Kim came in and pitched for the first time this season and did a great job."

Bails was the big bat for the Lady Bisons with three hits and two runs batted in Collins also added two hits. The Lady Bisons were credited with 10 hits in the game.
