Lady Bisons battle ETSU in A-Sun games

Lipscomb's Lady Bisons softball team fell 7-0 in extra innings and 4-2 in the nightcap in an Atlantic Sun doubleheader with visiting East Tennessee State Friday afternoon at Draper Diamond.

In game one the Lady Bisons and ETSU battled to a scoreless tie for seven innings. In the top of the eighth ETSU put seven runs on the board to ice the win.

The Lady Bisons had six hits in the game with first baseman Heather Collins collecting three, including one double. Center fielder Leigh Little had two hits, one a double. Second baseman Kate Richards slammed a double for the other hit for the Lady Bisons.

In the eighth ETSU capitalized on three doubles out of four hits, two errors and three walks. Stephanie Gaynord's double to right center was the big hit of the inning, driving in two runs.

Sara Meek (9-17) pitched seven innings for the Lady Bisons. She gave up six hits and six runs, five earned. She walked two and struck out seven. Allison Tyree pitched one inning, , allowing one earned run. She walked two and struck out one.

Mary Catherine Vercoe (9-12) went the distance for ETSU. She gave up six hits, walked two batters and struck out three.

In game two ETSU struck for one run in the first inning on a solo home run to left field by Gaynord.

The Lady Bisons took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. With one out Collins was hit by a pitch. Meek doubled to right center to send Collins to third. After Ashley Villalpando grounded out to third base, Richards singled to center field bringing home Collins and Meek.

In the top of the sixth ETSU rallied for three runs to take the lead for good. Gaynord doubled up the middle to bring home a run. Victoria Gast doubled to center field to score the second run. Vercoe singled to center to bring home Gast with the third run.

Meek had two hits, one a double. Shortstop Julia Davidson, Richards and left fielder Falon Catalano also had singles for the Lady Bisons.

Courtney Jenkins (7-13) recorded a complete game for ETSU. She scattered five hits and gave up a pair of earned runs. She walked one and struck out three.

Kim Jacobson (2-9) started for the Lady Bisons. She allowed six hits in 5.2 innings and gave up four earned runs. She did not walk a batter. She struck out one. Meek came back in to pitch the final 1.1 innings. She struck out three batters and gave up one hit.

The Lady Bisons are 14-34, 4-14 in the A-Sun. ETSU is 20-34 overall, 9-11 in the conference).
