Oct. 4, 2006
The calendar may say October, but Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Peck is already looking ahead to spring and her third season as head coach.
Sunday she will have the opportunity to see her players under game conditions when Middle Tennessee State, Belmont and Tennessee State visit for an afternoon of competition at Draper Diamond.
Belmont will play Tennessee State at 12:15 p.m. Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee are scheduled to start at 1:45 followed by Lipsconb against Belmont at 3:15.
Tennessee State will play Middle Tennessee at 4:45. Lipscomb and Tennessee State close out the day with a game at 6:15.
"It will be a good test for us with so many new players," said Peck who has added 10 freshmen to the 2007 roster as well as one transfer. "It has been an interesting last couple of weeks as far as practice. We have really come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.
"I am anxious to see them on the field and see how they match up with other teams. The three teams that are going to be here are three teams we will play in the spring. All three of them will be good tests for us."
The Lady Bisons return only one senior, outfielder Julia Davidson. There are four juniors from last year's team _ outfielder Leigh Little, outfielder-catcher Niki Bails, pitcher-infielder Kim Jacobson and first baseman-catcher Heather Collins. They are joined by catcher-third baseman Jennifer Alsup, a junior transfer from San Jose City College. There are no sophomores.
"We are going to have a lot of options this year," said Peck. "We have depth that we haven't had in the past. Everyone is capable of playing numerous positions."
The month of October is going to be busy for the softball program with several other events planned.
The team travels to Birmingham-Southern Oct. 21 for the Panther Fall Classic. The Lady Bisons will Wallace-Dothan at 1 p.m. followed by Birmingham-Southern at 3 p.m.
Plans are also being made for the first ever Purple and Gold game on Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. at Draper Diamond.
Members of past softball teams at Lipscomb are invited back to campus Oct. 29 for the Lady Bison Alumni Game at Draper Diamond. The game will start at 1:30 p.m.
Family and friends are invited to the game as well as a cookout afterwards. The current Lady Bison team will take on the Alumni in a modified game. Letters were sent to past players, but addresses often change. Any former Lady Bisons softball player interested in attending the event or needing more details should contact assistant coach Amber Wood at 615-279-7158.
