The best hitting team in the Atlantic Sun Conference met the best pitching team and they came away with a split decision over whether pitching beats hitting.

Lipscomb's Lady Bisons ran their A-Sun record to 3-1, beating Stetson 4-3 in the opening game Wednesday evening and falling 7-3 in game two. Both games were played at Patricia Wilson Softball Field in Deland, Fla. Stetson, the preseason pick by A-Sun coaches to win both the regular season and conference championships, is 1-1 to start conference play.

The Lady Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one. Julia Davidson doubled. Lauren Dortwegt walked and then stole second. Leigh Little singled to drive home both of them.

Stetson tied the game in the home part of the second. But the Lady Bisons took over the lead once again in the fifth with two runs.

Dortwegt, Little and Kellie Sirus all singled. Dortwegt scored when the center fielder made an error on the single by Kellie Sirus. Abby Keese flied out to center field to score Little on the sacrifice.

Stetson added one run in the seventh, but fell short of the win.

Christen Campbell improved to 7-6, throwing 6 1/3 innings for the Lady Bisons. She allowed eight hits and three runs, two earned. She walked four and struck out three. Christy Grisham came on in relief, shutting down Stetson completely in the final two-thirds of the seventh inning.

Erica Demers, 7-3, took the loss for Stetson as the she gave up six hits and four runs, three earned. She walked four and struck out four.

In game two Stetson scored one run in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Lady Bisons came back to tie the game with three runs in the sixth. Stetson struck back with four runs in the home part of the sixth to take the lead and hold on for the win.

In the sixth Heather Collins singled with one out. Kellie Sirus was hit by a pitch. Keese singled and was replaced with pinch-runner Abigail Craig. Christen Campbell grounded to second to bring in Collins. Davidson singled to send Kellie Sirus and Craig home.

Collins was the only Lady Bisons player with two hits in the game.

Kim Jacobson, 4-5 overall, started the game for the Lady Bisons. She gave up seven hits and six runs, four earned in 5 1/3 innings. She walked two and struck out one. Grisham was called on once again to relieve, throwing two-thirds of an inning/ She allowed two hits and one earned run.

Amanda Lindsey. 7-1, pitched a complete game for Stetson. She scattered six hits, walked four and struck out three while giving up three runs.

The Lady Bisons 12-14 overall are staying in Deland for the rest of the week. They will play in Stetson's tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Stetson is 20-9 this season overall.
