In the final game of the regular season, the Lady Bisons fell to Jacksonville State 2-0 in a single game sponsored by the Huntsville Alabama Sports Council. Jacksonville State used back-to-back squeeze plays in the bottom of the fourth to sneak past the Lady Bisons 2-0.
"It was a well played game from both teams," Head Coach Kristin Peck said. "It is a tough loss for us, but Jacksonville State is a good program. We battled early in the game, and they finally broke through to score first."
Early on in the game, the Lady Bisons looked like they were ready to bust the game wide open after loading the bases in the top of the first inning. However, Jacksonville State pitcher Karla Pittman got Abby Keese and Christen Campbell to ground out leaving the bases loaded.
In the top of the third inning, the Lady Bisons loaded the bases again, but Pittman once again pitched out of trouble, striking out Julia Davidson to end the inning.
In the first three innings of the game, the Lady Bisons put together six hits, but were unable to bring anyone across the plate. Utilizing a nasty change-up pitch, Karla Pittman only gave up one hit in the final four innings of the game. On the night, the Lady Bisons stranded 10 runners on base.
"We knew (Karla Pittman) was a good pitcher coming into this game," Peck said. "She is easily one of the best pitchers in the Ohio Valley Conference."
Christen Campbell got the start for the Lady Bisons, and pitched six innings only giving up four hits on the night. Campbell also struck out five batters.
After pitching three hitless innings, Christen Campbell gave up her first hit of the game when Rachel Fleming hit a leadoff double to right centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning. The next batter, Alana Hicks, then reached first base on a dropped fly ball that slipped out of the glove of Lauren Dortwegt to give Jacksonville State runners at first and third with no outs.
After getting the next batter to ground out to the pitcher, Nikki Prier placed a perfect squeeze bunt just in front of the pitcher's circle. Christen Campbell tossed the ball home, but Fleming slid into home plate just under the tag for the first run of the game. On the very next play, Jacksonville State executed another squeeze play to take a 2-0 lead.
"She just got in right in front of the tag on the first squeeze play," Peck said. "The squeeze is always a tough play, and they executed it well."
Despite the loss, the Lady Bisons still put together a strong offensive game with seven hits in the ballgame. Leigh Little and Kellie Sirus went 2-for-4 on the night, with Lauren Dortwegt, Heather Collins, and Kristie Sirus collecting hits as well.
The Lady Bisons will now travel down to Deland, Florida for the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, with the first game of the tournament scheduled for next Thursday, May 7.
"I would have much rather had a win going into the conference tournament," Peck said. "But even though we did not get the win, it was a well played game."
Picked to finish last in the Atlantic Sun preseason polls, the Lady Bisons finished the season fourth in the A-Sun with a 25-26-1 overall record and a 9-8-1 record in the conference. The Lady Bisons will be the fourth seed in next weeks A-Sun tournament and will play the third seed East Tennessee State University.
