Sunday, February 15, 2009Freshman pitcher Whitney Kiihnl picked up her first win of the season and Kellie Sirus, Lauren Dortwegt and Mollie Mitchell combined for nine of 15 hits as the Lady Bisons beat Providence 10-0 Sunday morning in Lafayette, La.
Mitchell drove in a season-high three runs. Dortwegt and Sirus each had two RBI.
The Lady Bisons closed out the Louisiana Classics Tournament hosted by the University of Louisiana with a 3-2 record. The Providence win was the second shutout of the tournament for the Lady Bisons.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth the Lady Bisons put five runs on the board. Christen Campbell opened by grounding out to third base. Mitchell singled to left. Katie Haab followed with a single to left to move Mitchell to third. Megan Rottler struck out swinging. Dortwegt loaded the bases via an intentional walk.
Vanessa Medina singled through the left side to score Mitchell. Sirus slammed a double to score Haab and Dortwegt. Abby Keese singled to the shortstop to bring in Medina.
The Lady Bisons scored the fifth run of the inning on a double steal with Keese safe at second and Sirus stealing home. Caroline Mason walked, but Campbell struck out to end the inning.
In the fifth the Lady Bisons added one run with two outs. Rottler doubled to left. Dortwegt walked. Medina then doubled down the left field line to bring Rottler home.
The Lady Bisons added another run in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.
Mason was walked. She moved to second on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on throwing error by the third baseman. Mason scored on a single up the middle by Mitchell.
But the Lady Bisons weren’t finished with the scoring. They added three more runs in the top of the seventh.
Dortwegt led off with a bunt single to the catcher. She then stole second. Medina walked and Sirus singled to the pitcher. The next two batters were out. Campbell walked for force Dortwegt across the plate. Mitchell singled to right to bring in Sirus and Medina.
Kiihnl threw 5 1/3 innings, striking out three and scattering five hits. Alaina Jacobson relieved Kiihnl. She did not allow a hit or run in 1 2/3 innings. She struck out two of the six batters she faced.
The Lady Bisons are home this week to prepare for their next tournament trip. They are in Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 21 and 22 for the Panther Invitational hosted by Georgia State.
