Florida Gulf Coast, ranked No. 23 nationally, only needed a sweep of the Lady Bisons to earn a share of the title. Neither one got what they wanted as they split the doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bisons lost game one 4-3 and won game two 5-0 at the FGCU Softball Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The series closed out the A-Sun season for Florida Gulf Coast. The Lady Bisons still have a doubleheader with Belmont Saturday at Draper Diamond. With the losses by both teams Campbell claims the regular season championship.
The Lady Bisons recorded their 16th shutout of the season in game two. It was only the third time that Florida Gulf Coast has been shut out this season. It was also only their second loss at home.
Christen Campbell, 10-0, threw all seven innings against Florida Gulf Coast, one of the best hitting teams in the conference. She held Florida Gulf Coast to only three hits while walking four and striking out four.
Kellie Sirus had home runs in each game. She has one in each of her last four games and has hit a team-leading 10 for the season.
In game two the Lady Bisons scored three runs in the third inning. Vanessa Medina hit a single through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mackenzie Tucker. Courtney Billington pounded a double to right field to score Medina. Sirus followed with a homer to left that also drove in Billington.
They added another run in the sixth when Lauren Dortwegt singled to second base to score Caroline Mason.
In the seventh the Lady Bisons scored one more time. Sirus led off the inning with a single up the middle and scored on a single to left field by Campbell.
In game one Sirus drove in all three runs for the Lady Bisons.
The Lady Bisons scored a run in the first inning. Dortwegt led off with a single up the middle. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Billington. Sirus singled up the middle to bring Dortwegt home.
In the fifth Sirus struck again with a single to left field that plated Tucker who had singled to center to start the inning.
With one out in the seventh Sirus hit a solo shot over left field wall with one out.
Florida Gulf Coast scored a run in the first, another run in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Whitney Kiihnl, 15-8, took the loss for the Lady Bisons. She gave up nine hits and four runs, all earned in six innings. She walked four and struck out six.
The Lady Bisons are 35-12 overall, 13-5 in the A-Sun. Florida Gulf Coast is 47-9, 15-5 in the conference.
Wednesday afternoon the Lady Bisons are back home at Draper Diamond for a non-conference game with Middle Tennessee State.
