Thursday, March 18, 2010The Lipscomb Lady Bisons shut down No. 12-ranked California-Berkeley 1-0 Wednesday evening in the first round of the Hawaii Spring Fling in Honolulu, Hawaii.
In the second game they fell 3-0 to host Hawaii. It was the first time this season the Lady Bisons have been shut out.
This was the first time the Lady Bisons have beaten a nationally-ranked team this season.
Sophomore right-hander Whitney Kiihnl threw her sixth shutout of the season and the 13th for the Lady Bisons.
Kiihnl gave up only one hit. She walked three and struck out nine.
The Lady Bisons had seven hits in the game. Kellie Sirus slammed a double. Kiihnl had two hits to help her own cause.
Catcher Mollie Mitchell drove in Sirus with the only run of the game in the sixth inning.
Christen Campbell started the Hawaii game. She threw 5.1 innings and gave up five hits and three runs, one earned. She walked one and struck out four. It was her first loss this season in five decisions.
Alaina Jacobson closed out the game, pitching the final two-thirds. She struck out one.
Courtney Billington had two hits for the Lady Bisons who managed only four hits in the game.
Hawaii scored one run in the third and two runs in the sixth.
The Lady Bisons are 20-3. California slipped to 19-5. Hawaii is 19-9.
The tournament continues Thursday with two more games, one with California and one with Hawaii. The Lady Bisons will face both teams three times in the tournament.
