Lady Bisons lose two games in Red & Black Showcase
The Lipscomb Lady Bisons jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Maryland answered with four runs in the fourth inning for a 4-3 win.

Saturday night at the Red & Black Showcase at the University of Georgia’s Jack Turner Stadium in Athens.

The Lady Bisons lost 2-0 earlier in the day to Illinois State. The Lady Bisons are 1-3 to start the season and face No.3-rated Georgia Sunday afternoon at 2 in the tournament finale.

In the Maryland game Mollie Mitchell led off the second inning with a single to center. Vanessa Medina popped out on a bunt attempt. Haley Elliott hit a single to center that was mishandled by the Maryland center fielder. Mitchell scored on the error and Elliott advanced to third, but the next two batters were out to end the inning.

With one out in the fourth Mitchell walked. Medina then blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Lady Bisons a 3-0 lead. It was the first home run of the season for the Lady Bisons in four games.

Freshman J.J. Nelson started on the mound for the Lady Bisons and threw three shutout innings before giving up four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

After giving up three singles she walked in three runs and allowed another to score on an illegal pitch to give Maryland the lead at 4-3.

With two outs in the inning Whitney Kiihnl replaced Nelson on the mound. In 2.1 innings Kiihnl struck out five.

The Lady Bisons made one last challenge in the seventh when Breanna Thurman singled to left with two outs.

Kiihnl was on the mound for the Lady Bisons. She struck out six and scattered four hits. She did not walk a batter.

Both Kiihnl and third baseman Rena’ Cothron committed errors in the first inning. Caiti Kopp slammed a double to left field that scored two runners. Both runs were unearned.

Kiihnl, Courtney Billington, Caroline Mason and Thurman each had hits for the Lady Bisons.

Megan Warner went the route for Illinois State. She struck out eight and walked two.
