Saturday, April 16, 2011Ali Watson threw a complete-game two-hitter and the Lady Bisons outhit Stetson 9-2 to win the second game of Saturday’s double-header, 4-1 against Stetson at Patricia Wilson Field. Lipscomb fell 6-1 in the first game.
The much-needed win in the nightcap pushed the Bisons record to 23-17 overall and 10-4 in the Atlantic Sun.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak in conference play as Lipscomb finishes the four-game road-trip 1-3.
The three-game losing streak was the first time the Lady Bisons had lost three straight games in conference since April of 2007 when they fell to ETSU (DH) and Mercer (one game).
Watson allowed one run and one walk to go along with three strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the season.
The game was scoreless until both teams traded runs in the fourth inning.
Lipscomb manufactured its first run of the game in the fourth courtesy of two infield singles by Mackenzie Tucker and Caroline Mason and a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Mollie Mitchell.
With the game tied at one, the Lady Bisons took its first two-run lead of the day on Breanna Thurman's two-run home run to left. Vanessa Medina singled to lead-off the inning and then was pinch-ran for by Shelby Cunningham. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner up, Thurman launched her sixth homer of the season, giving Lipscomb a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning.
Haley Elliott’s RBI-single in the sixth gave the Lady Bisons some insurance as they took a 4-1 lead and that’s all Watson and the Lady Bisons needed.
Mitchell led-off the sixth with a single and then advanced to third on Mason’s double. With runners on second and third Elliott laced one through the left-side of the infield to give the Bisons a 4-1 lead.
Watson retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings to improve to 5-3 on the year.
Tucker, Mason, and Mitchell all recorded two-hits in the winning effort while Thurman led the team in RBI with two.
The Lady Bisons will be action next week as they host Kennesaw State and Mercer in A-Sun Conference play at Draper Diamond.
