Lipscomb Set to Host Lady Bison Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb softball team takes a three-game winning streak into play this weekend when they host the Lady Bison Classic at Draper Diamond.

Drake, Eastern Michigan, Alabama State and MTSU come to Nashville for the three-day tournament, beginning Friday at 12 noon.

This is the third season in a row the Lady Bison will host this event. Last year, Lipscomb hosted Butler, Appalachian State and Eastern Illinois in the Lady Bison Classic. Lipscomb went 2-0 in the weather-shortened event.

In 2010, Lipscomb won all four games of the Lady Bison Classic, defeating Murray State two times and Evansville and Eastern Kentucky once in the inaugural event.

Last Time Against This Weekend’s Opponents
A frequent opponent, Lipscomb run-ruled MTSU earlier this spring at the College of Charleston Classic in an 8-0 affair that earned Whitney Kiihnl the win. The remainder of this weekend’s foes will be first-time opponents for the Lady Bison.

Anderson, Kiihnl Shine Against IPFW
Strong pitching performances by Kiihnl and Ashley Anderson gave the Lady Bison a midweek sweep of IPFW at Draper Diamond. Kiihnl scattered three hits and struck out eight in the opener, an 8-0 run-rule victory highlighted by home runs from Haley Elliott and Bridgette Begle. Anderson struck out nine in the second game, making a two-run home run by Kelsey Cartwright stand up for the victory. The win is the first of Anderson’s Lady Bison career.

On a Roll
Four Lady Bison are hitting above .300 over the last ten games: Kiihnl (.444), Cartwright (.424), Elliott (.346) and sophomore Rena’ Cothron (.308). Cartwright has slugged four home runs and drove in 11 runs during that time. Kiihnl has also been stellar on the mound, going 6-1 with an 1.43 ERA, three shutouts and 45 strikeouts during that time.

Quick Scout

  • Drake – The Bulldogs have yet to play a home game this year, and enter this weekend on a three-game losing streak.
  • Eastern Michigan – The Eagles are 1-5 against the A-Sun this season, defeating Jacksonville on Feb. 25 but losing to FGCU twice (Feb. 24, Feb. 26) and dropping a road doubleheader to the Dolphins on Feb. 29.
  • Alabama State – The Hornets team ERA is a whopping 8.27, which isn’t protected very well by an offense hitting .218.
  • Middle Tennessee – The Blue Raiders won’t beat you on the mound; the pitching staff has an ERA of 5.00 and has yet to shutout any foe this season.

Lady Bison Go 2-3 at Citrus Classic
Lipscomb won the opener and the finale at the Citrus Classic at Disney’ Wide World of Sports Complex, but dropped three games in between, March 2-4. Lipscomb opened up with a season-high 13 runs against LIU-Brooklyn before dropping the second game to South Alabama, 9-2. The Lady Bison dropped heartbreakers to Penn State (4-3) and Ball State (2-0) on Saturday before rebounding with an 8-2 Sunday victory against St. John’s. Kelsey Cartwright hit .375 on the weekend, one of four Lady Bisons who hit better than .300 in Florida. Whitney Kiihnl picked up both wins and pitched three complete games.

Fact of the Weekend
Lipscomb has not lost a non-conference home game since April 20, 2010 against UAB.

Quest for 1,000
Entering the weekend, Kiihnl has 982 career strikeouts while at Lipscomb. If she passes the 1,000 career strikeout mark, she will become just the third Atlantic Sun pitcher to reach the milestone, joining Florida Atlantic’s Nicole Myers (1,376) and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers (1,338).

On Deck
Lipscomb continues its 10-game homestand next week with a midweek doubleheader against UAB (March 15) beginning at 3 p.m. The Bison host another Conference USA team, Marshall, in a March 19 doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
