Lady Bison Softball Ready For Marshall

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After rain washed away Lipscomb’s Thursday doubleheader against UAB, the Lady Bison hope to get back on the field at Draper Diamond Monday when they host Marshall in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Head coach Kristin Ryman is anxious to get her charges back on the field.

“It’s important to carry over the momentum we’ve had the last few games,” Ryman said. “We have a tremendous respect for team’s from Conference USA and how they compete within the conference, so Monday will be a challenge.”

The Lady Bison (15-6) have been rolling of late, winners of seven straight. Lipscomb’s pitching has been stellar, with Whitney Kiihnl surpassing the 1,000 strikeout plateau last weekend and being among the nation’s leaders in wins and shutouts. Redshirt freshman Ashley Anderson looks to extend a 17-inning scoreless streak; she picked up a win and a save March 11.

Last Time Against Marshall

The Lady Bison have faced Marshall just one other time in the program’s history. In 2001, Lipscomb dropped a 1-0 decision to the Thundering Herd at the Georgia Tournament in Atlanta.

Rainy Thursday Postpones Doubleheader with UAB

Lipscomb’s Thursday afternoon doubleheader against UAB was postponed due to inclement weather. A make-up date has yet to be announced.

Kiihnl Named ASUN Pitcher of the Week After Hitting Milestone

Kiihnl earned her second A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honor and the 11th of her career based on her four-win performance last week. She struck out 28, including her 1,000th career punch-out, and threw three complete games and one shutout.

Quick Scout on Marshall

The calling card for the Thundering Herd is speed; Marshall (15-10) is one of the best in the nation on the base paths with 78 stolen bases already in 2012. When not wreaking havoc on the base paths, the Herd is backing up junior pitcher Andi Williamson, a Tennessee transfer who enters Monday sporting a 10-6 record.

Big Hitting, Power Pitching Pace Lady Bison

Kiihnl hit .600 and struck out her 1,000th career batter over the course of Lipscomb’s 4-0 showing at the Lady Bison Classic. Kiihnl struck out a season-high tying 11 against Drake before reaching the milestone against MTSU. Kelsey Cartwright hit .444 with three homers, including a grand slam and a solo shot against Alabama State.

Fact of the Day

Since Kristin Ryman took over as head coach in 2006, Lipscomb softball is 3-6 against Conference USA foes. This includes two wins against UAB in the 2010 NCAA Regional.

Lipscomb By the Numbers

The first NCAA stat rankings were released Monday and Lipscomb ranks high in several categories. Kiihnl is second in the nation in wins (13) and third in shutouts (six), while also earning top-100 standing in strikeouts (20th, 100), strikeouts per seven innings (92nd, 7.2) and ERA (97th, 2.03). Cartwright ranks in the top-100 in home runs (25th, seven), slugging (34th, .833) and runs per game (93rd, 0.9). Lipscomb as a team has posted top-100 marks in home runs per game (36th, 0.9), W/L percentage (41st, .714), slugging (59th, .439), ERA (2.63, 78th), scoring (83rd, 4.95) and steals per game (86th, 1.24).

On Deck

The Lady Bison travel to the West Coast to compete in the final regular-season tournament on Lipscomb’s 2012 schedule, the Mustang Classic. Lipscomb will face UNLV and host Cal Poly twice, with a rematch against Citrus Classic foe Ball State rounding out the tournament.
