Softball set for midweek against Austin Peay

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lady Bison softball team looks to shake off a rough weekend and return to the winning ways head coach Kristin Ryman has become accustomed to when they host Austin Peay in a mid-week home doubleheader, Tuesday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Draper Diamond.

The Lady Bison are eager to get back on the field after last weekend, especially knowing the road ahead after Tuesday. Lipscomb embarks on an eight-game road swing to Belmont, Kennesaw State, Mercer and Western Kentucky.

The Lady Bison have struggled in recent outings, going 4-6 in their last 10 games. That hasn’t deterred senior Caroline Mason, who has hit .345 and two of her season’s five home runs in that time.

Last Time Against The Lady Govs

The Lady Bison haven’t faced Austin Peay in the regular season since 2010 at Chattanooga’s Frost Classic. Lipscomb won 15-0 behind a perfect game from Whitney Kiihnl, who struck out 13 of the 15 batters she faced. Courtney Billington and Kellie Sirus hit back-to-back home runs and Mollie Mitchell drove in two runs for Lipscomb. The teams were supposed to meet last year in a doubleheader that was canceled due to inclement weather.

Quick Scout: Austin Peay

The Lady Govs have struggled mightily in years past, but are rounding into contender status in the Ohio Valley Conference. Sophomore Lauren DeCastro, leads the Lady Govs in hitting at a .392 clip, and is 4-5 with a squad-leading 2.60 ERA on the mound. Freshman Paige Neely (.333) and senior Amy Mills (.301) are also raking at the plate.

Lipscomb Struggles in First Home A-Sun Weekend

The Lady Bison dropped three of four in the first home conference weekend of 2012. Lipscomb dropped both game one’s by 1-0 scores, marking four 1-0 losses in a row in the opening game of a doubleheader. The Lady Bison rebounded against Florida Gulf Coast with a 14-5 thrashing of the Eagles, but struggled in game two against Stetson and lost 5-3. The Lady Bison have now lost four home games, the first time Lipscomb has dropped more than two games at Draper Diamond since 2009.

Fact of the Day

Since March 15, Kiihnl has been tagged with six of her nine losses in spite of her 0.72 ERA and 64 strike outs in 68.1 innings pitched.

Lipscomb By the Numbers

Kiihnl and junior Kelsey Cartwright continue to rank high nationally in a myriad of categories. Kiihnl ranks in the top-50 in wins (17, 21st) and saves (two, 49th), while also posting high ranks in shutouts (six, 24th), strikeouts (164, 23rd) and ERA (41st). Cartwright is 26th in the nation in home runs with 11, and slugs at an .743 clip, good for 52nd nationally. Per game, she’s high in home runs (0.31/g, 31st). While she didn’t get many opportunities this weekend, sophomore Rena’ Cothron holds strong in the top-five nationally in sacrifice hits, moving to fourth at 0.42/g. At nearly a home run per game, the Lady Bison are one of the top power squads in the nation, ranking 47th at 0.86/g. The team’s ERA (2.20, 43rd) and win percentage (.639, 65th) afford them similar rankings.

On Deck

The Lady Bison travel down the Boulevard this weekend for an A-Sun doubleheader with Belmont at Rose Park, Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
