Aguirre tabbed as A-Sun Player of the Week

MACON, Ga. – Freshman outfielder Gracey Aguirre has been named the Atlantic Sun softball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Aguirre tore the cover off the ball at the plate last week, hitting a blistering .636 (7-for-11) with four doubles, four runs scored and four runs batted in.

“Since the beginning of the year, we’ve seen a lot in Gracey,” said Lipscomb head coach Kristin Ryman. “She has one of the best pure swings on the team. For Gracey to be our first position player to be named Player of the Week this year speaks highly to what she’s done recently. The way she’s been hitting, it’s hard not to have her in the line-up.”

The freshman from Houston, Texas seemed to have a hand in the deciding run of all four Lady Bison victories last week. In midweek non-conference action against Austin Peay, she scored the winning run in game one of the doubleheader on a Rena’ Cothron sacrifice and drove in the winning run in game two with a two-run single in the second inning.

Against Belmont, Aguirre scored the only run of the first game, doubling and coming around to score via an error. She went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI in the second game, and was even the batter when a passed ball allowed teammate Mollie Mitchell to score what would be the game-winning run.

The weekly award is the first of Aguirre’s career and the first for a Lady Bisons batter since Courtney Billington won the April 25, 2011 award. She’s the first Lipscomb freshman honoree since Mollie Mitchell for the week of March 30, 2009.

“As a freshman, you have to earn respect,” Aguirre said. “My mentality is to work hard every day and earn playing time.”

USC Upstate's Hannah Alexander was named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week, with Lipscomb's Whitney Kiihnl earning an honorable mention.

Aguirre and the rest of the Lady Bisons will be back in action Friday when they begin a trip to Georgia to face A-Sun foes Kennesaw State and Mercer.
