Lady Bisons run into trouble against UAB

Attack. Attack. Attack.

Coach Kristin Ryman sounded more like a football coach than a softball coach Tuesday night, but that was one of the points she wanted her Lady Bisons to remember after falling 4-0 and 3-0  to the UAB Blazers at Draper Diamond.

“We have to get back to an attack mode,” Ryman said. “We have to execute the little things.

“We like who is where in the lineup. We have a good lineup but we are not stringing a lot of hits together. That makes it tough to score against good teams.”

It marked the first time that the Lady Bisons had been shut down in both ends of a doubleheader at home since April 16, 2003 when MTSU was the foe. The last time they were shut out in a doubleheader was April 7, 2006 at North Florida.

The Lady Bisons are 30-16. UAB is 32-17.

“They have a good team and I think we have a very good team,” Ryman said. “I think these games down to doing the little things. They had an approach about them that I think was different than we did.

“UAB executed the little things. They got every bunt down. They moved runners. They made plays when they needed to. They pitched well. They advanced runners with ground balls when they needed to.”

Right-hander Whitney Kiihnl threw seven innings in game one and took a shutout into the seventh. She gave up a single to center to Mandy Lowman to start off the inning. She then walked Kristen McGrath. Lauren Webster was out on a sacrifice bunt, but Kiihnl walked pinch-hitter Megan McGrath to load the bases. Issa Brown came in to pinch hit and blasted a grand slam over the fence in right center.

Kiihnl, 21-10, scattered five hits while walking three and striking out four. Amber Torres won for UAB on a four-hitter. Kelsey Cartwright led the Lady Bisons with two hits.

In game two UAB struck for two runs in the first inning and they wouldn’t need any more. Left-hander Ashley Anderson went the distance for the Lady Bisons, shutting down the Blazers until they added one more run in the seventh.

Anderson, 9-6, allowed 10 hits. Kayla Orr and Kate Armstrong each had a double. She struck out three and walked three. Only one of the runs she gave up was earned.

“Ashley gave up a lot of bloop kind of hits and balls that just kind of found their way between the infield and outfield,” Ryman said. “Later in the game UAB started hitting a little bit harder.

“But Ashley kept us in the game. We struggled to get anything going offensively. We have to have an offensive mindset. We can’t get on our heels and take four innings to figure things out.”

UAB’s Leigh Streetman threw a three-hitter. Caroline Mason, Haley Elliott and Rena’ Cothron each had a single for the Lady Bisons.

The Lady Bisons are on the road Wednesday night in Bowling Green to play a doubleheader with Western Kentucky. The first game starts at 5.

“This team needs to know that we are good,” Ryman said. “We need to come out with just as much swagger as the other team and really go out and get the win instead of getting into a defensive mode.

“We have to go and get wins. We are going to play a good team Wednesday. People aren’t going to hand them to us. We have to learn from these games and get the most out of them.”
