Softball heads to Florida for regular season finale

FORT MYERS, Fla. – When two teams with something to prove play each other the outcomes are often tense and unpredictable.

The Lipscomb Lady Bisons, 26-23, 11-6 in the Atlantic Sun are in southern Florida this week to take on Florida Gulf Coast in the final regular season series for both teams. The Lady Bisons need one win in the three games to seal the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Sun Championship that begins May 6 at Florida Gulf Coast.

There is one spot left unclaimed in the A-Sun Championships with Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast in the running.  Florida Gulf Coast is 23-27 overall, 5-12 in the conference. Jacksonville is just ahead of the Eagles with a 23-25 overall record, 5-10 in the A-Sun.

The Lady Bisons have won their last four games and swept Kennesaw State this past weekend.

SCOUTING FGCU: The Eagles are 3-7 in their last 10 games and are coming off of a split with Florida International.

Five players are batting in the .300 range. Kelsey Carpenter leads the team with a .349 average followed by Kelsey Huff (.342), Natalie Lopez (.339), Alexis Ross (.336) and Makenzie McAvoy (.303).

Carpenter also leads the team with nine doubles, three triples, five home runs and 31 RBI.

Huff is tops on the team in stolen bases with 22.

Ashley Dobson paces the Eagles in the circle with a 10-8 record and 3.14 ERA. She has recorded 80 strike outs in 116 innings.

Shelby Morgan is 7-8 with a 3.25 ERA. She has struck out 51 batters in 112 innings.

Both Dobson and Morgan have made 25 appearances. Both have started 18 games.

The Lady Bisons swept the Eagles last season and are 10-6 against them overall.


Team rankings: Overall the Lady Bisons are fourth in the A-Sun in batting average (.289), slugging percentage (.427), runs scored (237), hits (369) and RBI (211). They are third in on base percentage (.366), doubles (58) and total bases (545). They are second in stolen bases (79) and triples (11). They are fifth in home runs (32).

In the circle the Lady Bisons are first in strikeouts (321) and first in batters struck out looking (93). They are second in opposing batting average (.233) and third in earned run average (3.32).

In A-Sun games only the Lady Bisons are second in batting average (.344), slugging percentage (.490), on base percentage (.411), RBI (96) and tied for second in runs scored (103). They are third in hits (165), doubles (21) and total bases (235). They are fourth in home runs (13).

On defense the Lady Bisons are first in A-Sun games only with a .988 fielding percentage.

The pitchers have combined for the lead in opponent’s batting average (.216), strike outs (125) and batters struck out looking (32). They are second in ERA with a 2.80.

Ain’t that tough enough: The Lady Bisons have played 11 games this season against teams that are in this week’s USA Today/NFCA Top 25 or receiving votes for the Top 25.

Streaking by:  Elmore enters the week with a 17-game hitting streak, the longest on the team this season.  Neely has a seven-game streak, one shy of her personal high of eight this season. Gracey Aguirre has hits in her last six games.

Elmore has reached base 28 times, the longest on the team. Neely has a 15-game streak, her longest of the season. Aguirre has reached base in her last eight games. Laura Dukes has been on base in each of her last six games.

ON DECK: It is tournament time in Fort Myers with the Atlantic Sun Championship scheduled for May 6-9 at FGCU Softball Complex.

The first two seeds earn a first round bye in the double-elimination tournament. The winner earns the A-Sun’s automatic berth for the NCAA Tournament.
