FT MYERS, Fla. – Needing one win to secure the No. 2 seed in next week’s Atlantic Sun Conference tournament, the Lipscomb softball team wasted no time getting the job done with an 8-0 win over FGCU on Thursday afternoon at the FGCU Softball Complex.
The contest was scoreless through five innings as Lipscomb’s Kelly Young and FGCU’s Shelby Morgan dueled in the circle until the Lady Bison offense got rolling in the top of the sixth. Baylee Williams opened the frame with a single to left before Brianne Welch singled to center to put two aboard.
A Brittany Elmore bunt single loaded the bases before a pair of Eagles errors broke open the scoring as Mimi Cartwright drove in Welch ahead of Gracey Aguirre, who brought Elmore and Paige Neely across the dish. Laura Dukes then broke the game open with a double that brought both Aguirre and Cartwright around to score. Lipscomb later added the sixth run of the inning when Williams collected her second hit of the stanza to drive in Dukes.
Cartwright and Aguirre then continued the offensive onslaught in the seventh inning driving in two runs to round out the scoring.
Young (15-13) notched her sixth shutout of the season surrendering just four hits in seven innings of work.
With the win, Lipscomb improves to 27-23 overall and 12-6 in A-Sun play while FGCU falls to 23-29 overall and 5-14 in league play.
Check back later tonight for a full recap of both game one and game two including reaction from head coach Kristin Ryman.
