MOBILE, Ala. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons took advantage of an error by Butler’s first baseman to score two runs with one out in the seventh for a 2-1 win over Butler in the first game of the Mardi Gras Invitational Friday afternoon.
The Lady Bisons were held without a hit until the sixth inning when Paige Neely slammed a double to left center. She was left stranded at third.
In the seventh Abby Fenichel led off with a walk. Becca Dean entered the game as a pinch-runner. Baylee Williams reached base on a bunt single and Dean moved to second. Caitlin Plocheck was out on a sac bunt that sent Dean to third and Williams to second.
Brianne Welch reached base on a fielding error by the first baseman that allowed Dean and Williams to score the tying and winning runs.
The Lady Bisons managed only two hits, one each from Williams and Neely.
Right-hander Kelly Young, 2-1, went the distance for the Lady Bisons. She scattered five hits and gave up one run, unearned. She struck out six and walked five.
Kristin Gutierrez, 2-2, was in the circle for Butler. She struck out three and walked two.
The Lady Bisons, 4-1, are back in action this afternoon against Oklahoma State, 0-3. The Lady Bisons will close out the tournament Sunday with a rematch against Butler, 3-3.
