Softball loses to UAB and weather

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  The Lipscomb Lady Bisons started out with a bang but ended up on the losing end of an 8-7 score in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at UAB Tuesday night.

Game two was canceled due to rainy weather conditions.

The Lady Bisons opened with five runs in the top of the first sparked by a grand slam home run over the left field fence by Baylee Williams. Before the big hit by Williams, Mimi Cartwright singled to center to score Brittany Elmore.

UAB answered with five runs in the bottom of the first.

In the fifth the Lady Bisons took the lead again as Gracey Aguirre tripled to right field to score Cartwright for a 6-6 lead.

UAB scored one run in the fourth to tie the game.

Williams reached base on an error in the seventh to allow pinch-runner Becca Dean to score giving the Lady Bisons a 7-6 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh UAB capitalized on a wild pitch to tie the game at 7-7 and then scored on an error on a failed pickoff move by the catcher for the winning run.

Brianne Welch connected for a pair of doubles. Cartwright also added two hits.

Kelly Young, 4-5, went the distance for the Lady Bisons. She allowed 11 hits and eight runs, only three earned. She struck out seven and walked three in 6.2 innings.

The Lady Bisons are 8-10. UAB, from Conference USA, is 15-5.

  • Dee Baddley made her first start in the field and third start of the season. She played left field. Her previous two starts were at designated player.

Welch made her first start of the season in right field.

  • Williams leads the Lady Bisons with 10 RBI.

Her four RBI mark the second time this season a Lipscomb player have driven in that many runs in a game. Abby Fenichel drove in four against Missouri-Kansas City Feb. 6.

  • Aguirre’s triple was her first of the season.
  • Welch is only the second Lady Bison to hit two doubles in a game. Paige Neely has twice hit a pair of doubles (Missouri-Kansas City, Feb. 6 and Evansville, Feb. 14).

The Lady Bisons game with Tennessee Tech scheduled for Thursday at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium has been canceled due to the expected sleet and snow in the area Wednesday.

The game has been rescheduled for April 15 at 5 p.m.

The Lady Bisons are idle until March 10 when Mississippi State from the Southeastern Conference visits for a 3 p.m. game.
