Softball Mission Trip Day 1:

To my family: Hello, and yes, I miss you already. To my friends and acquaintances: fancy meeting you here. And to those who do not know me: It’s nice to meet you (insert firm, but friendly handshake here)!

My name is McCarley Thomas. I am a junior English major/Spanish minor from Brentwood, Tennessee. What’s my job? Thanks for asking. My job is to attempt to enlighten you on the musings of our 14-member team as some embark upon their first mission trip, others leave the country for the first time and we all take a journey far outside of our comfort zones.

Last night (Thursday), most of our mission team met in the Hall of Fame room in Allen Arena to fellowship and secure a few last-minute details about the trip. Chris Klotz, known to most as Klotzy, was kind enough to join us and challenge our team to have the right mindset about everything we are about to encounter.

He mentioned a conversation that Moses had with God in Exodus 33. I was immediately sold as Moses is my favorite character in the Bible. At many points in Moses’ life he lived on a blind faith. He knew that God was going to do incredible things through him, but he had no concept of what those things would be. Instead of doubting God and resisting, Moses embraced the excitement of what might be and surrendered himself to the work of God.

At this moment I think most of us feel a bit like Moses whether we realize it or not. We all know that God is about to do some incredible things through us, but none of us completely comprehend what exactly He is getting ready to do. My prayer for our team is that we will surrender our doubts and reservations and be willing vessels. I pray for faith to act upon the promise that God is going to do something, and He is going to do something big.

I want to leave you all with one thought.

For the past week or so I have had a song stuck in my head and I would like to share the lyrics with you. The song is “Come Away” by Jesus Culture. Feel free to look it up. I assure you it will not disappoint.

“Come away with me. Come away with me.

It’s never too late. It’s not too late.

It’s not too late for you

I have a plan for you.

I have a plan for you.

It’s gonna be wild.

It’s gonna be great.

It’s gonna be full of me.”

As I type we are sitting in the airport and the “A” class is boarding the plane to San Diego. Our journey is about to begin. As we begin I have a few things to ask of you. I ask that you please continue to pray for our team. Pray that we may be open to the ways that God will move within us. Pray that we may touch the lives of those we encounter through all aspects of our trip. And pray that we love freely and generously. I must ask you one more thing of you. Come away with us on this journey. It’s gonna be wild. It’s gonna be great. It’s going to be full of HIM.

Bendiciones (Blessings),

P.S. If ever you find yourself in San Diego, I highly suggest you make your way to a Padres game. HUGE shout out to Mr. Coach Ryman for the set up in the suite!!
