GULF SHORES, Ala. – Lipscomb’s Destinee Brewer made an outstanding collegiate debut but it wasn’t the destiny of the Lady Bisons to get a victory in their first game.
After Lipscomb and Samford both were scoreless in seven innings, Brewer hit a two-run inside the park home run to left field in the top of the eighth. But the runs weren’t enough.
Despite Brewer’s extra-inning effort, the Lady Bisons fell 3-2 to Samford in their season opener Friday night at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. Samford is 1-1 on the season having lost earlier in the day to Central Arkansas.
Samford capitalized on an error by shortstop Khayla Green with one out and bases loaded to score one run in the bottom of the eighth.
With the bases still loaded Caitlin Bice singled to left to score Cal Brister and Shelby Maze with the tying and winning runs.
Brewer led the Lady Bisons with two hits. She also caught two fly balls in left field, both in the second inning. In addition, she stole her first base for the Lady Bisons.
Lipscomb second baseman Baylee Williams recorded a hit and her first stolen base of the season.
Brittany Elmore and Caitlin Plocheck also had singles for the Lady Bisons.
Lipscomb right-hander Tanner Sanders went the distance with four strikeouts, three walks, one hit batter and four hits in 7.2 innings. All three runs were unearned.
Mollie Hanson was in the circle for Samford and gave up five hits and one earned run. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Maze led Samford with two hits, one a double in the third.
The Lady Bisons will close out the night against South Alabama, the No. 25 team in the country in preseason polls.
