GULF SHORES, Ala. – The first day of the season didn’t go as hoped for the Lipscomb softball team.
After opening the season at the Sand Dollar Classic with an eight-inning 3-2 set back to Samford, the Lady Bisons closed out the night at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex with a 7-3 loss to No. 25-ranked South Alabama.
The Lady Bisons, 0-2, are back in action Saturday. They face Florida A&M at 3 p.m. followed by Louisiana Tech at 6. They close out the trip Sunday at noon when they face Southern Mississippi.
South Alabama struck for solo runs in the second and third innings and added two in the fourth.
In the fifth inning the Lady Bisons pushed three runs across the plate to trim the lead to 4-3.
Sarah Higgins got her first collegiate hit, a double to center field, to lead off the fifth. Riley Brown followed with a single through the left side of the infield.
Khayla Green grounded out to the pitcher to bring home Higgins and move Brown to second. Brown went to third on a passed ball. Destinee Brewer reached base on a throwing error which allowed Brown to score. Brittany Elmore grounded out to third to move Brewer to third. Brewer then came home on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.
South Alabama struck in the seventh with three runs on three hits and one error.
Right-hander Kelly Young threw a complete game for the loss. She scattered 10 hits, walked six and struck out 10.
The Lady Bisons finished with six hits by six different players.
