Softball trio named to ASUN All-Academic Team

MACON, Ga. – Lipscomb led the way with three selections to the Atlantic Sun Softball All-Academic Team.

Pitchers Tanner Sanders and Kelly Young along with second baseman Brittany Elmore earned spots on the team. The senior trio helped lead the Lady Bisons on the field this season while also boasting high GPA's in their classroom studies. The team includes 11 players.

Sanders and Young were unanimous selections, owning 3.90 and 3.81 GPAs respectively. Like Sanders, Elmore is an interdisciplinary teaching major with a 3.87 GPA.

Young and Elmore have also been named to the CoSIDA District 3 All-Academic Team for 2016. Young has also been honored this year with the Kinesiology Outstanding Major Award and the James R. Byers Award given each year to the top Lipscomb male and female athlete recognizing athletic and academic excellence as well as Christian leadership.

Jacksonville's Victoria Brown was named the 2016 ASUN Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year after an impressive season on both the softball diamond and the classroom.

Brown was the undoubted leader for the Dolphins this season, leading the squad in both ERA in the pitching circle and batting average on the plate. The senior boasts a 3.85 GPA while pursuing a Master in Business Administration. This is Brown's second-straight appearance on the ASUN All-Academic Team.

USC Upstate's Lexi Shubert and Ryan Rector both earned nods for the Spartans. Shubert was the 2015 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the '16 team as an art studio major, while Rector makes her first appearance on the squad as an elementary education major.

Louie Ross and Jeanie Verderese were named to the All-Academic Team representing FGCU. Ross finished the regular season as the conference leading in batting average, owning a 3.73 GPA as a forensic studies major, while Verderese boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA in management.

Kennesaw State, North Florida and Stetson round out the All-Academic Team with one selection each in Taylor Denton, Shelby Duncan and Jessica Griffin respectively. Denton is a junior integrative studies major, while both Duncan and Griffin just wrapped up their senior years in the classroom.

The ASUN All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
