Softball loses to No.3 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons ended a tough first day at the Unconquered Invitational with a 13-1 loss to No. 3-ranked Florida State.

The game was called after Lipscomb batted in the top of the fifth due to the run rule.

The Lady Bisons are back in action at JoAnne Graf Field Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Furman.

Lipscomb opened with a run in the first on Peyton Ward’s solo home run to left center field.

Florida State answered with four runs in the bottom of the first and added nine more in the third, including a grand slam by Jessica Warren.

McCarley Thomas started in the circle for Lipscomb and walked the first three batters she faced. Two of those scored on illegal pitches. She was credited with three earned runs allowed.

Caitlin Plocheck moved from first base to the circle and pitched the rest of the first. She threw 2.1 innings and gave up five hits and five runs, all earned. She struck out one and walked one.

Megan Gray then made her collegiate debut in the circle. She threw 1.2 innings and scattered six hits while allowing five runs, all earned. She hit two batters and struck out one and walked one as well.

Jessica Burroughs threw four innings for Florida State and gave up one earned run on three hits. She struck out six and walked one.

Cassidy Davis closed out the game with one inning. She did not allow a hit and walked one.

The Lady Bisons are 0-2 to start the season after losing 2-1 in eight innings to Marshall to start the tournament.

Notes from the scorebook:

  • Ward, Sarah Higgins and Plocheck each had one hit for Lipscomb.
  • Abby Fenichel led the team in being hit by a pitch last season and earned her first of the season against Florida State.
  • Ward got her first collegiate stolen base. Destinee Brewer had a stolen base in the Marshall game.
