Softball gets first win of the season

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A two-run blast by Caitlin Plocheck in the first inning was all the scoring Lipscomb needed in a 2-1 win Saturday morning over Furman in the second day of the Unconquered Invitational.

“It was really good to see us win a close game early in the season,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “We turned it around today.”

Plocheck has been the most consistent hitter for the Lady Bisons in the first three games. Her shot to left field left no doubt it was going over the fence from the moment she connected with her bat.

“Plocheck has had a great start to the season so far,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “She has always been a really great hitter.

“When she is feeling it she is a very tough out and obviously has a lot of power to go with it. It was a pretty good shot to left.”

It was the first win of the season for the Lady Bisons, 1-2. Furman has lost all three games in the invitational hosted by Florida State at JoAnne Graf Field.

It is expected the Lady Bisons will play next at 5:30 p.m. today based on the seeding for the remainder of the invitational. They will probably have a rematch with Marshall, a 2-1 winner over the Lady Bisons in eight innings Friday.

Mandy Jordan threw her second complete game of the season. After allowing one run in the top of the first she shutdown Furman the rest of the way. Jordan allowed only three hits, one for extra bases. She struck out seven, walked two and hit one batter.

“Mandy really gutted it out and found a way to win,” Ryman said. “She has always been a fighter. She kept grinding even near the end when she didn’t have her best stuff.

“She has grown tremendously over the past year. The key for her has been being more consistent in hitting her spots. She is a better all-around pitcher this year.”

Scorebook notes:

  • Jordan has two complete games. She had three for the entire 2016 season.
  • Yeager connected for her first collegiate hit.
  • Fenichel has been hit two times in three games.
  • Plocheck has hits in all three games this season.
  • This was Plocheck’s first multiple RBI game of the season and the first for a Lipscomb player.
