Softball extends win streak to five games

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – It was well after midnight on the East Coast when the Lipscomb Lady Bisons beat host College of Charleston 9-5 in the nightcap of the Wyndham Garden Cougar Classic.

Earlier in the evening Saturday the Lady Bisons beat Eastern Kentucky 15-7 in six innings in a game called for “run rule.”

Lipscomb is 4-0 in the tournament with a final game Sunday at 10:30 against Winthrop at Patriots Point.

The win over the College of Charleston was the fifth straight for Lipscomb, 6-3. College of Charleston, sustaining its first loss, is 6-1 on the season.

Lipscomb scored one run in the first, five in the second, three in the third and one each in fifth and sixth innings.

College of Charleston answered with a run in the first and added two each in the fourth and fifth.

Khayla Green drove in a run with a double in the five-run second.

Kasey Gibson connected for singles in the second and third inning with each producing and RBI.

A single by Jenna Pealor closed out the scoring for Lipscomb in the sixth.

The big hit for College of Charleston was a two-run homer by Lexee Emanuel in the fifth.

Mandy Jordan, 4-1, started for Lipscomb. She threw 4.1 innings and allowed six hits and five runs, all earned. She struck out six and walked four.

McCarley Thomas made her second appearance of the evening and threw the final 2.2 innings to pick up her first save of the season. Thomas shut down College of Charleston on two hits. She struck out three, hit one batter and did not walk a batter.

College of Charleston used three pitchers who gave up a combined 11 hits and nine earned runs. They walked three and struck out four.

Starter Sydney Shipley, 2-1, took the loss.

Scorebook notes:

  • Plocheck has at least one hit in all nine games this season. Gibson has hits in the last six games.
  • Peyton Ward stole two bases and has six for the season.
  • Green had her first multi-hit game of the season with a triple and a double.
