Softball's Thomas records a 7-0 shutout

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons have not allowed a run in their first two games in the Purple and Gold Challenge.

Saturday afternoon Lipscomb shut down Valparaiso 7-0 at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium. Lipscomb is 13-5. It was the first loss of the season for Valparaiso, 5-1.

In a quick turnaround the Lady Bisons are back on the field to face Stony Brook, 1-5 at 3:30.

Lipscomb scored four runs in the second inning on four hits and a pair of walks. They also left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Hannah DeVault scored on a wild pitch in the third to give Lipscomb a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth Caitlin Plocheck capped the scoring for Lipscomb with a rocket to left center that also scored Kasey Gibson who had reached on an infield hit.

McCarley Thomas, scattered three hits, struck out 10 and walked four. Thomas is 4-3.

Valparaiso used three pitchers. The combined to give up nine hits, six walks and one strikeout. Mackenzie Grossman, 1-1, took the loss.

Scorebook notes:

  • Thomas set a season and career high for strikeouts in a game.
  • Gibson and Plocheck led the game with three hits apiece. Gibson has multiple hits in eight games. This was her first game with three hits. Plocheck has seven multi-hit games. It was her three-hit game.
  • Abby Fenichel extended her hitting streak to seven games. She is tied with Gibson for the team lead.
  • Plocheck finished with a game-high three RBI.
