Early morning game not a highlight for Lady Bisons

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The early morning sun did not shine brightly on the Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team.

In the opening game of the University of Memphis softball tournament at the Memphis Softball Complex the Lady Bisons dropped a 3-1 decision in eight innings to Western Illinois, 7-11, from the Summit League.

The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for the Lady Bisons, 16-6.

Lipscomb managed only three hits in the game. Two of them were by Kasey Gibson who connected for a single and a double. Hannah DeVault added a single.

In the fifth inning Khayla Green led off with a walk. Gibson singled to left field with Lipscomb’s first hit of the game. Green moved to second. Green advanced to third as Western Illinois tried to pick off Gibson at first. Green scored when Caitlin Plocheck reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher.

Western Illinois scored one run in the second and two in the eighth.

McCarley Thomas, 5-4, went the distance for Lipscomb. She allowed six hits, walked three and struck out six.

Peyton Abbott, 2-2, struck out seven and walked three for Western Illinois.

Scorebook Notes:

  • It was the 10th multiple-hit game for Gibson, tops on the team. She extended her current hitting streak to 11 games, second longest on the team this season. Gibson has also reached base in her last 11 games.
  • The seven-game win streak had been tied for the best among ASUN Conference teams.
  • Lipscomb has not been shut out this season in 22 games.
  • Higgins drew a walk and extended her on base string to 13 games, second highest of the season. Abby Fenichel also had a walk and has been on base in her last 11 games.
  • Higgins and Fenichel each stole their first bases of the season.
  • The Lady Bisons are 1-2 in eight-inning games this season.
